1st Grade:
In first grade, our students relate to the Jewish "pillars" of Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim in the following ways:
Their Torah study focuses on B'reishit, the book of Genesis. Since Genesis is the story of the Jewish people's "first family," we connect to it by learning about our own families, too. When it comes to Avodah("prayer"), our area of learning is the Jewish holidays. Finally, we think about our heros in learning aboutG'milut Chasadim ("deeds of lovingkindness").
Angela Feldt is our first grade teacher. She's been in that class for a number of years, and refuses to graduate!
2nd Grade:
In second grade, our students learn about each of the three "pillars" on which the world stands: Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim.
Our study of Torah focuses on the story of Exodus, with an eye toward seeing ourselves in the story. When it comes to Avodah ("prayer"), we spend the year "Getting to Know God." And our experience ofG'milut Chasadim ("deeds of lovingkindness") brings us opportunities to see how we can make a difference!
3rd Grade:
In the third grade, our theme is kedushah, "holiness." Through each of the pillars of Judaism -- Torah, Avodah and G'milut Chasadim -- that have been introduced in the younger years, we explore holiness in our lives. Our students refine their own understanding and definition of k'dusha and apply that understanding to how ritual objects, symbols, prayer, and our behaviors can make moments and places special, holy, and closer to God.
Our Torah study is focused on Vayikra, Leviticus, which calls us to holiness. Our experience of Avodah ("prayer") leads us to inquire about the many, many ways that we can experience God. And when it comes to G'milut Chasadim ("deeds of lovingkindness"), we start to take responsibility for the planning and the doing of our own sacred acts.
4th Grade:
Interpersonal relationships are at the heart of our fourth-grade studies. Through Torah, Avodah andG'milut Chasadim, our students are shown the direct relationship between being a member of a community and their own behaviors.
Our Torah study takes us to the books of B'midbar(Numbers) and D'varim (Deuteronomy), which offer us a view of covenantal relationships. Our prayer studies in fourth grade focus on the healthy tension between Keva ("fixed prayer") and Kavanah("intention"). Our work with G'milut Chasadim("deeds of lovingkindness") asks the question, "How does our behavior affects all of our relationships?"
5th Grade:
Thematic Thread:
Throughout this year, the theme of Reform Judaism and the power of community will connect the strands. How is Reform Judaism based on the message of the prophets? What is the role of the individual in a community? How has our Movement dealt with the prayers in the siddur? How can we each reach out to those in our community?
Themes:
• Torah – N'vi'im and Prophecy.
• Avodah – Prayer as a Discipline, Prayer as a Learning Process.
• G'milut Chasadim – G'milut Chasadim and our Community; Reaching Out.
6th Grade:
Thematic Thread:
What is Revelation and how do we experience it? Is there a human role in divine revelation? Students will investigate Biblical texts which relate to the individual's relationship with God, study the components of the Torah service and the role of the sh'liach tzibur (prayer leader), and g'milut chasadim on a more universal level.
Themes:
• Torah – Ketuvim; My Relationship with God.
• Avodah – Torah Service and My Role in it.
• G'milut Chasadim – G'milut Chasadim and the World; Widening Circles of Involvement.
7th & 8th Grade:
Thematic Thread:
This year focuses on personal reflection and improvement with the theme "Hineini--Here I am." Torah study turns B'reishit and commentaries, focusing on family and interpersonal relationships;Avodah explores liturgical texts on the topic of Jewish identity and the boundaries that define us;G'milut Chasadim starts with the individual, tikkun middot and repairing ourselves.
Themes:
